They successfully constructed a fully operational website replete with AI-generated images, audio, product descriptions, as well as a deceptive Facebook login and counterfeit checkout page designed to pilfer users’ login credentials and credit card information. Astonishingly, this malevolent website demanded minimal technical acumen for its creation and operation. Furthermore, with just the click of a button, Sophos X-Ops replicated this malicious scheme, generating hundreds of similar fraudulent websites within minutes.

It’s a natural progression for criminals to embrace new technologies for automation,” remarks Ben Gelman, Senior Data Scientist at Sophos. “Just as the advent of spam emails revolutionized the landscape of scams, the emergence of generative AI presents a similar paradigm shift. If there’s an AI technology capable of orchestrating complete, automated threats, it’s only a matter of time before malicious actors exploit it. We’ve already witnessed the integration of generative AI elements in traditional scams, such as the use of AI-generated text or images to lure unsuspecting victims.”

Yet, our motivation behind this research transcends mere observation. By pioneering a system for the large-scale production of fraudulent websites, one more advanced than the tools currently wielded by cybercriminals, we find ourselves in a unique position to analyze and prepare for this impending threat before it gains widespread prominence.

Cybercriminals Can’t Agree on GPTs: Discord in the Dark Web

In our quest to comprehend cybercriminal attitudes towards AI, the vigilant experts at Sophos X-Ops delved deep into the dark web, scouring four prominent forums where discussions about LLMs thrived. While the utilization of AI in cybercrime remains in its nascent stages, threat actors dwelling in the shadows of the internet harbor intriguing conversations concerning its potential, particularly in the realm of social engineering. Our research has already borne witness to AI’s involvement in romance-based scams and crypto schemes.

Moreover, our findings reveal that the majority of forum posts revolved around compromised ChatGPT accounts available for sale and “jailbreaks”—methods employed to bypass the safeguards implemented within LLMs, granting malevolent actors the means to exploit them for malicious purposes. Surprisingly, Sophos X-Ops stumbled upon ten ChatGPT derivatives touted by their creators as tools for launching cyber-attacks and crafting malware. However, the response from the cybercriminal community was far from unanimous, with many expressing skepticism and wariness of potential scams involving these ChatGPT imitators.

While concerns about the misuse of AI and LLMs by cybercriminals have loomed large since the advent of ChatGPT, our research paints a different picture,” observes Christopher Budd, Director of X-Ops Research at Sophos. “Thus far, we’ve observed more skepticism than enthusiasm among threat actors. Across two of the four dark web forums we examined, discussions on AI numbered a mere 100 posts, compared to 1,000 posts on cryptocurrency during the same period. Although some cybercriminals attempted to wield LLMs for creating malware or hacking tools, their endeavors yielded rudimentary results and often faced skepticism from their peers. In one case, an eager threat actor aiming to showcase ChatGPT’s potential inadvertently exposed significant information about their real identity. We even stumbled upon numerous ‘thought pieces’ discussing the potential negative societal impacts of AI and the ethical dilemmas surrounding its utilization. In essence, it appears that, at least for the time being, cybercriminals are grappling with the same debates regarding LLMs as the broader society.”
