These findings, derived from Protect AI’s “huntr” AI and machine learning bug bounty program, highlight the escalating security challenges within the rapidly growing AI market. The “huntr” program, supported by a strong community of over 15,000 members, actively hunts for critical vulnerabilities across the open-source software supply chain.

The report points out that the tools used to develop machine learning models—the core of AI applications—are susceptible to specific security threats. The open-source tools mentioned in the report are downloaded thousands of times each month for constructing enterprise AI systems, many of which may have inherent vulnerabilities straight out of the box. Among the 20 vulnerabilities detailed in the report, critical flaws were identified in crucial tools such as Setuptools, Lunary, and Netaddr.

This issue arises from how Setuptools processes package URLs, permitting code injection via manipulated URLs. If attackers gain control over these URLs, they can inject and execute harmful commands on systems dependent on Setuptools.

Lunary, a platform designed to enhance, protect, and manage applications built with large language models, was found to have an authorization bypass vulnerability. This flaw permits users who have been removed to continue accessing, modifying, and deleting organizational templates using outdated authorization tokens, raising the risk of unauthorized data manipulation.

Lastly, Netaddr, a Python library used for network address manipulation in AI projects involving network data or infrastructure, was discovered to have a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability. This vulnerability could be exploited to bypass SSRF defenses, potentially allowing attackers access to internal networks.

Protect AI ensured all vulnerabilities were communicated to maintainers at least 45 days before public disclosure and worked closely with them to provide timely fixes. The vulnerabilities in Setuptools, Lunary, and Netaddr were all patched with new releases before the report’s publication.
